Webcomic Blue Hair Face Piercing Two Girls and a Guy
Anime is known for its outrageous character designs. While some are massive hits, some are an instant thumbs down. One would think that with the wide variety of colors and art styles studios have to play around with; similarities would be few and far between.
However, that isn't the case. Characters who look eerily similar to each other are pretty standard. Sometimes it's because they come from the same studio with the same art styles, and sometimes it's because studios want to capitalize on the popularity of more famous characters. Either way, when it happens, it can be jarring.
Updated on May 23rd, 2022 by Sarah Martin: Since this list was published in 2020, we've added five more pairs of characters who look so similar they could be twins. Even though they come from different series, their resemblance is eerily uncanny.
15 Tomoe (Kamisama Kiss) & Inuyasha Are Both Yokai With Long White Hair & Pointy Ears
Tomoe is a fox yokai, and he became Nanami's familiar. His hair is cut short for most of the series, but his pointy fox ears always remain. However, before sealing the contract of the familiar, he had extremely long hair that wildly flowed.
Inuyasha is half-yokai, half-human. He's a dog yokai with long white hair and pointy ears — similar to Tomoe. The only thing separating these two is that one is a fox yokai, while the other is a dog. Plus, Inuyasha's eyes are golden, but Tomoe's are purple.
14 Loid Forger (Spy X Family) & Shirogane (Kaguya-Sama: Love Is War) Have Similar Hairstyles
Loid Forger is the alias of the spy named "Twilight." He took on the fake name to execute his mission to prevent a war from breaking out. To accomplish this task, Forger had to create a makeshift family and enroll his adoptive daughter in the same school as one of the world's most powerful men.
Shirogane is the student council president, and he has feelings for Kaguya. During most of the series, they engage in mind games to see who loses and confesses first. The only differences between Loid and Shirogane are that the latter has noticeable eye bags and wears his hair to the side. However, for the most part, they look similar.
13 Shanks (One Piece) & Gildarts Clive (Fairy Tail) Both Have Red Hair & Muscular Builds
Shanks is the chief of the Red Hair Pirates; He's become famous for his reputation in the Roger Pirates, the only group that ever successfully crossed the Grand Line. Shanks' most distinct features are his red hair and the three scars across his eye.
Gildarts Clive is one of the S-Class Mages in the Guild, and he's one of the most revered mages in the series. Ultimately, he wants to protect and foster the new generation to take his place. Like Shanks, he has striking red hair and a sturdy, muscular build.
12 Jellal (Fairy Tail) & Sieg Hart (Rave Master) Have Blue Hair & Identical Face Markings
Jellal's most recognizable feature is his face marking. It's unclear what the tattoo means, but it's one of the most iconic parts of his appearance. In his series, Jellal is a Dark Mage who wants to rebuild the R-system. He only started such a goal after his memory was wiped.
Sieg Hart and Jellal are eerily alike in more ways than one. They both have blue hair and style it similarly. Plus, they even have the exact same face marking on the same eye. They're both mages with warped goals they seek to achieve — in Sieg Hart's case, he wants to preserve the flow of time.
11 Shinichi (Parasyte) & Yuri Katsuki (Yuri!!! On Ice) Have Similar Glasses & Hairstyles
Even though their circumstances couldn't be more different, Shinichi and Yuri resemble each other. They style their hair the same way and even wear similar glasses. They also have similar face shapes.
Shinichi started as an average high school student, but then a parasite invaded his arm. The parasite didn't completely possess him, but it resides in his right hand — earning him the name "Migi." On the other hand, Yuri is a competitive figure skater with severe stage fright, making him the figure skater with the world's biggest glass heart. However, his programs are always mesmerizing to watch.
10 Shiroyuki (Snow White With The Red Hair) & Chise (The Magician's Bride) Have The Same Hair & Eye Color
Shiroyuki is a kind-hearted girl with a will of steel. She flees from her kingdom to get away from the clutches of a predatory prince and ends up being the Court Herbalist of the Kingdom of Clarines.
Chise was found by Elias Ainsworth at an auction, where he purchased her for a huge sum and brought her home. There, he told her she was to be his wife and will spend the rest of her time becoming her apprentice and wife. Both characters have fire-red hair with similar bangs and big green eyes.
9 Shunsuke (Sanrio Boys) & Thoth (Kamigami No Asobi) Are White-Haired Boys With Athletic Builds
Shunsuke is an outgoing boy who loves sports, as is evidenced by his muscular body. But one thing he loves even more than sports is the Hello Kitty. Thoth is an Egyptian God who possesses all the wisdom in the entire universe. In this reverse anime, he is a main character, whose most telling personality traits are his pride, confidence, and his stern behavior. Like Shunsuke, Thoth has short white hair, and both men have thin, athletic builds and frequently bare their chests.
8 Saber (Fate Series) & Violet (Violet Evergarden) Are Both Blonde
Saber is one of the most popular characters from the Fate anime, novels, and video game. Her blond hair (usually tied in milkmaid braid style) is one of her most defining physical features, as are her green eyes.
With a similar hairstyle but possessing blue eyes, Violet could easily be Saber's long-lost twin — especially seeing how she herself has been used as a weapon in many wars.
7 Renshou (Inu X Boku) & Rin Matsuoka (Free!) Have The Same Hair Color & Style It Similarly
Renshou Sorinozuka is a yokai in his slice of life anime. His tan skin, red hair, and tattoo on his face are one of the first things people notice about him. Ririchiyo fondly calls him "brother".
Rin is the primary antagonist of the first season of Free! His red hair has always been his most unique feature, and he's known among his friends for his short temper, especially whenever Haru's name is mentioned.
6 Rin (Blue Exorcist) & Gray (Fairy Tail) Have Similar Hair Colors & Eye Shapes
Gray has a carefree personality, but he always comes through whenever his help is needed. He can often be seen getting into verbal and physical arguments with his best friend Natsu.
Rin is the oldest of the Okumura twins, but because of his laid back and childish attitude, he's always assumed to be the younger twin. Like Gray, he constantly bickers with his brother Yukio but at the end of the day, he's willing to lay his life down for him. Both characters share many physical traits, especially hairstyle/color and eye shape.
5 Ittetsu (Haikyuu) & Riichi (The Magician's Bride) Are Clumsy Bespectacled Men
As the faculty advisor of Karasuno High's volleyball club, Ittetsu is persistent, patient, and a perennial optimist. He is respectful of others and always polite in his speech, which is why he's liked by everyone.
Riichi makes an appearance in Maho Tsukai no Yome: Hoshi Matsu Hito, the anime's OVA. He also has a gentle and likable personality. Like Ittetsu, he can sometimes be clumsy and awkward as well, and both men are bespectacled with similarly tussled hair.
4 Moral (Hamatora) & Undertaker (Black Butler) Both Have Long, White Hair & Unsettling Smiles
As the primary antagonist of Hamatora, Moral is an intelligent and sadistic serial killer. He doesn't hesitate to use, manipulate, or kill people to get what he wants. For the first two seasons of Kuroshitsuji, Undertaker is shown as an eccentric side character. In the movie Book of the Atlantic, his true nature is revealed — he's the primary antagonist who's responsible for the deaths of hundreds of innocent people. The two characters favor each other via their long white hair, piercing eyes, and unsettling smiles.
3 Kakeru (Run Like The Wind) & Kageyama (Haikyuu!!) Have The Same Hair Color, Style, & Face Shape
Kakeru's bluntness is often confused with rudeness. Initially disliked by his fellow runners, he eventually makes a place in their hearts as a good friend. He also learns to be direct without offending people's sensibilities.
Like Kakeru, Kageyama used to be short-tempered and extremely arrogant about his skills, due to which he was shunned by his teammates. At his new school, his new teammates give him a chance, and he shines — both as a volleyball player and as a friend. Both boys have the same color and style of hair as well as identical face shapes (most notably their pointed chins).
2 Kamina (Gurren Lagann) & Galo (Promare) Both Have Spiky Blue Hair
As the protagonist of Gurren Lagan, Kamina is loudmouthed, arrogant, and hot-headed. He acts before he thinks and is always in constant need of validation via compliments. He also has shown consistent disrespect towards girls.
On the other hand, Galo of Promeopolis is slightly air-headed but an extremely loyal and devoted individual. He owes his life to his city's mayor and repays his debt by becoming a fire-fighter in his city, whose main aim is to get rid of the Burnish terrorists.
1 Armin (Attack On Titan) & Hozumi (Prince Of Stride) Have Similar Androgynous Hairstyles
As the tritagonist of the series, Armin is a timid yet brilliant young boy. He follows his friends' footsteps and becomes a soldier of the Survey Corps. With the passage of time he starts playing a more important role in the series.
Hozumi is popular among his friends for his androgynous appearance. Like Armin, he's a brave young boy who smiles even when he's in great physical pain. His dream is to find a job in the theater after he graduates from school.
